The Pitmen Painters

8 November 2019–16 November 2019

Company of Ten

Main Stage

Synopsis

When a group of coal miners begin evening classes with a college professor, they want to learn about art: what’s good, what’s bad and what it all means. But soon the men discover that there’s more to the art world than they’d first thought. And when they start painting for themselves, the art world discovers there’s more to this group of miners than they expected, too.

Based on a true story, The Pitmen Painters is an inspiring, funny play about ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

The Stage called it a ‘warm-humoured, thought-provoking picture of working class empowerment’.

After seeing the play The Observer’s reviewer ‘went out into the night furious and happy, and almost too stirred up to sleep’.
