Synopsis

The Cripple of Inishmaan is a darkly comedic play set on a remote Irish island in the 1930s. It follows Billy, a young man with a disability, who struggles for acceptance in a community that often ridicules him. When news of a film crew arriving on a neighbouring island spreads, Billy seizes the opportunity to escape his mundane life staring at cows and pursue his dreams of becoming an actor.

As he navigates the complexities of love, friendship, and prejudice, the play intertwines humour and heartbreak, revealing the characters’ vulnerabilities and aspirations. Through sharp dialogue and rich storytelling, McDonagh explores themes of identity, belonging and the human condition, ultimately challenging the perceptions of what it means to be ‘different’ in a close-knit society.

This play contains strong language.
