Synopsis

Based on the recent exhibition at St Albans Museum, and presented as a rehearsed reading, these real-life stories have been collated and adapted from transcripts of interviews with local residents.

In the 1950s and 1960s, many people from the Caribbean answered the call of the British Government to come to the UK and help rebuild the country after the devastation of the Second World War. Encouraged by promises of a better life for themselves and their families, many settled in St Albans, but the reality was very different from their expectations, and they were often confronted by discrimination and racism.

This insight into their experiences is fascinating, moving, sometimes surprising or humorous, but above all, honest. Their stories are told by local people, including those who made the journey themselves.
