The Company of Teens, a resident youth company of the Abbey Theatre, has enthralled audiences with performances of a short historial romp in the nave of St Albans Cathedral.
The play nodded to the mystery and miracle cycles of the Middle Ages, gambolling through seven centuries of medieval St Albans. It started in the 8th Century with King Offa deciding to build an Abbey, then took in the establishment of the Market, building the School, Nicholas Breakspeare becoming Pope Adrian, and everything else of note up until the building of the Clock Tower.
As director Philip Reardon said, ‘The brief from the Cathedral was to have a theme of migration – hence the recurrent character of an estate agent counting up his money as the population increased.’
