Every show produced by the Company of Ten – the Abbey Theatre’s resident company – includes a private charity night. At these nights, a selected charity sells tickets to supporters in order to raise funds. In the case of our upcoming play Hay Fever, the charity Spotlight on Africa will be our focus. The charity tells us:
Since 2007, Spotlight on Africa has worked in eastern Uganda amongst the poorest of the poor, many of whom are former child soldiers or refugees who have escaped decades of conflict.
We aim to transform entire communities by focussing on four strategic areas: water, health, education, and economic empowerment.
We have drilled 30 deep water boreholes that provide fresh water for 10,000 people, a health clinic that sees 50,000 patients every year, a maternity hospital that will safely deliver 2,500 babies every year, and a community health project that immunises 5,000 children every year. We have built schools to educate and feed over 1000 children daily. Our newly launched ICT Centre provides IT training to all members of the community.
We also run successful training programmes for skills development including tailoring, carpentry, agriculture and bee keeping which create new opportunities for all age groups.
With your support we can change people’s lives immediately by giving them access to a reliable source of clean water and healthcare, and permanently, through educational and economic development projects.
You can book tickets for the general run of Hay Fever here.
