Looking for an entertaining couple of hours and some fresh air? Then try our free family adventure trail. It’ll take you to corners of St Albans you mightn’t have seen before PLUS there’s a fun murder mystery to be solved.

Here’s the story behind the trail. At the Abbey Theatre, we’d been rehearsing a play called The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Everything was going smoothly until someone found the director of the play, Harry Holywell, stabbed to death on the stage!

The trail is called The Strange Case of Harry Holywell and when you download it you can join in the fun, crossing off suspects by solving clues to be uncovered on the historic city streets.

The trail starts and ends at the theatre, with ample parking available at Westminster Lodge. It takes about 90 minutes to complete and leads you through fascinating locations such as the Cathedral grounds, Romeland and many of the more charming back roads.

You can download a trail booklet for single sided printing or a trail booklet for double sided printing.

PLEASE remember though – the trail takes you past lots of houses, so please take care not to be loud and to always take your litter home with you.

People who’ve completed the trail have said kinds things about it:

“Can I just say a huge thank you to the lovely Abbey Theatre for setting this up. My wee family loved doing this walk today and enjoyed seeing many families doing the same.  My 10 year old son ( sorry 10 and a half yr old as half is very important apparently🤪) loved using his sleuth young brain cells to work out a few of the tricky clues (but obvious once you find them! Just think outside the box!!😂) …. The trail points out little things, down the side streets that we’ve walked past many times. So due to this trail we shall now notice the little but interesting things. 👏‘”

We did it today too, was so much fun! And we’re all exhausted with achey legs! Got my boys out for the whole morning, great stuff. Whoever thought of it all did an amazing job.

We’ve also done this, it’s brilliant. My 8 year old and 11 year old really enjoyed it.

We totally loved it, couldn’t recommend more!!!

We did this today and thought it was great! Well done and thanks so much for putting it together and sharing.

We did this yesterday, can highly recommend!

It’s suitable for everyone from 5 to 100 (assuming they’re fit enough to walk up Holywell Hill). Enjoy it – and if you do, please tell your friends.
