The Merry Wives of Windsor may have been written over 400 years ago but the Company of Teens, the junior wing of the Company of Ten, think the play is so modern it could have been written today.

Director Philip Reardon says of the play, which opens on July 18: ‘Our production of this sparkling Shakespearian comedy is set firmly in the 21st century, with its many themes still so relevant  today. Gender fluidity, powerful men exercising their ‘rights’, scheming politicians, social class and wealth are all explored to delightful comic effect in the play.

‘Our young members of The Company of Teens have carried out textual analysis of the script and also of their characters and have been surprised at how of-today the play is. As one said, every single character in this play reminds us of someone in the news.

‘During exercises, when the actors were interviewed in character by the whole cast, present day equivalents to the play’s personalities included Donald Trump, Hyacinth Bucket, Brian Blessed, Ru Paul, Julian Clary and Vicky Pollard. What a crazy hotchpotch of characters!’
