Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People is the Company of Ten’s next production, and its continued relevance and accessibility could provide a big surprise.
The version we’re presenting is by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, and it was first seen in its current form in 2019. It featured Alex Kingston, famous for her work in ER, Doctor Who and Alpha Dog. The play has been updated from 1882 to contemporary times complete with modern (if occasionally colourful) language.
The play is strikingly contemporary. At its heart, it explores the cost of truth-telling when powerful interests would rather it stay buried. Dr Teresa Stockmann (a gender swap from traditional productions, which adds a whole new layer of interest) discovers contamination in the town’s baths and refuses to stay silent. Her situation speaks to our ongoing struggles with whistleblowing, political corruption, sexism and environmental crises.
Today’s audiences recognise in Stockmann the loneliness and backlash faced by those who challenge comfortable consensus. In an era of fake news, populism and corporate spin, the play’s warning about the dangers of majority opinion – and how easily it can be swayed by fear and self-interest – feels more urgent than ever. Its portrayal of a media that turns against the truth-teller also strikes an uncomfortable chord in a world where information is often shaped by money and politics.
Whether reflecting on environmental dangers, public health scandals or freedom of speech, An Enemy of the People remains a powerful call to moral courage. It forces audiences to ask: would you stand up for the truth if it cost you everything?
