The Shape of Things

Thu 24 Jan 13 8pm and 2.30pm MAT

Company of Ten

Does true love conquer all? Is beauty in the eye of the beholder? Is change better, or is it just change? All are questions asked by Neil LaBute in this darkly comic play. Four twenty-somethings play out complex courting rituals in their quests for perfection – but there’s a twist so distorted it will stay with you long afterwards. First performed by the Almeida Theatre Company. Contains adult themes and language.

The Shape of Things is a 2001 play by American author and film director Neil LaBute (also known for his stage works In The Company of Men, Fat Pig and The Furies). It premiered at the Almeida Theatre, London in 2001 with Paul Rudd as Adam and Rachel Weisz as Evelyn. The Londonist described a recent production as ‘a shocking, thought-provoking examination of the not-so-trifling subjects of art, love and morality… Energetic, witty and fast-paced, there’s never a dull moment.’

Philip Reardon began his directorial career with the Abbey theatre in 2003 with Elsie and Norm’s Macbeth. Other of his notable productions include Oh Clarence by PG Wodehouse, The Miracle by Lin Coghlan and Neil Simon’s London Suite, which was selected to open the newly renovated Main Theatre in 2004. His last production for the Abbey Theatre, Widows, was described by the St Albans Review as ‘a practically faultless production.’
