Maureen, a forty-year-old spinster, lives with her manipulative mother outside Leenane, in the mountains of Connemara. Both are trapped in their disturbingly dysfunctional relationship, but then Maureen finds, with the visit of builder Pato Dooley to the village, a last chance of love and escape. The twists and turns, the dark undertones and laugh-out-loud moments, of this perfectly plotted drama have deservedly placed Martin McDonagh’s play among the classics of modern theatre.
