As the moon rises over a small Bulgarian town at the height of the Serbo-Bulgarian war of 1885, an exhausted solider takes refuge in the bedroom of Raina, a young Bulgarian woman.

The play crackles with wit and humour as Shaw ridicules both the futility of war and romantic love.

George Orwell said that Arms and the Man was written when Shaw was at the height of his powers as a dramatist. ‘It is probably the wittiest play he ever wrote, the most flawless technically, and in spite of being a very light comedy, the most telling.’
