Happy Birthday means a hilarious night out
The Abbey Theatre is 50 this year and by happy coincidence we’re putting on Marc Camoletti’s hilarious Happy Birthday.
Bernard is having an affair, and so is his wife. They’re spending the weekend at their country house where Bernard has also invited his mistress to celebrate her birthday. To throw his wife off the scent he invites his good friend Robert to pose as his mistress’s boyfriend. But Robert is actually Bernard’s wife’s lover…
Farce is recognised as one of the hardest acts to pull off, as director Roger Scales explains. ‘Actors are effectively thrust into a state of almost constant, accelerating chaos, while at the same time having to be in full control of the dialogue, the plot and the timing.
‘I have always thought that if you can successfully play farce you can truly consider yourself an actor. Holding and manipulating an audience and keeping it in rapt attention no matter how improbable the story line is not for the fainthearted.’
Performances take place on the Main Stage from Friday 29 to Saturday 30 June at 8pm, Sunday 1 July at 2.30pm and Tuesday 3 to Saturday 7 July at 8pm.
